Raise up a Generation of Abolitionists

“Where the battle rages, there the loyalty of the soldier is proved; and to be steady on all the battle-field besides, is mere flight and disgrace to him if he flinches at that one point”
— Martin Luther
Where is the battle of this generation raging in Australia and worldwide? Where else but at the fight for the total and immediate abolition of child sacrifice. In sanitised terminology, human abortion. Approximately one third of my generation, Gen Z, has already been slaughtered in the womb. My children’s generation, Gen Alpha, has been murdered at the same rate. Generation Beta began in 2025 — what will their death toll be? It is, therefore, imperative that we arm these next generations of Christians to run unflinchingly into this battle, armed with the unfailing Word of God to crush child sacrifice underfoot to the Glory of God.
Christian mother and father, you are steady on many battlefields. But have you faced the one that rages? Have you prepared your children to fight boldly against abortion, the evil that lurks right under our noses, in our cities, in our hospitals? Or do you flinch at this battle, considering it too heavy or awkward to teach children, preferring to censor the word ‘murder’ and turn away abolitionists proclaiming the truth at family-friendly pro-life events? Of course, it’s so much easier when we can all feel good about ourselves by never saying scary words, wandering aimlessly around Hyde Park once a year, and avoiding confrontation at all costs.
All children’s Bibles, even the most superficial editions, include the Ten Commandments and the story of Moses in the Bulrushes. In my experience, this is the easiest and most obvious way to introduce Abolitionism to children. You can also use the Christmas story when King Herod tries to kill Jesus and, less popularly included in storybook bibles, murders every boy under two in Bethlehem. The conversation goes quite naturally, but if I were to write you a script, it would go something like this:
Mother: ‘Do you remember reading about the Pharaoh who tried to kill all the Hebrew baby boys? He told the midwives helping the mummies to kill the babies instead of looking after them. What an evil thing to do. But the midwives obeyed God instead of the Egyptian leaders and tried to save little babies like Moses.’
5-year-old: ‘That Pharaoh was so bad, I hate him!’
Mother: ‘Yes, he was evil. It’s right to hate sin. If somebody tried to kill a baby in our country, would they be allowed to? Or is it against the law?’
5: ‘The police would get them and put them in prison!’
Mother: ‘That’s right. We have a law that says it’s wrong to murder both grown-ups and babies, just like God said in His Law. But did you know our leaders still let people kill some babies just like Pharaoh? Australia doesn’t have any laws to protect babies when they are still in a mummy’s tummy. We need to change our law so that people who try to kill babies in a mummy’s tummy are also criminals and get in lots of trouble too.’
5: ‘Mummy, why would anyone try to hurt a baby in mummy’s tummy? How could they be so evil?’
Mother: ‘Well, some people pretend the baby isn’t a real person because it hasn’t grown as big as a newborn baby. But that’s foolish because you are a person even though you haven’t grown as big as me, and no one is allowed to hurt you! Other people are so evil and hate God’s law so much that they know the baby is a real person and want to kill it anyway because they are selfish. Maybe they don’t want to look after it. We need a law that will stop those people, don’t we! When you grow up, will you help me protect babies inside their mummies?’
5: ‘I will help right now! We will put those baddies in prison!’
I had this conversation nearly word for word, toddler interruptions excluded, and it illustrates how remarkably easy it is to teach the plain truth to children. Children are so uncorrupted by propaganda and pro-child-sacrifice talking points that the very idea of anyone committing an abortion is foreign to them, and thus, true justice under the law is an extremely natural response. The simplicity of the Abolitionist message; unhindered by iniquity, incrementalism, pragmatism, or the claim that women who murder their children are second victims; is obvious to them.
A small caveat—children need only be acquainted with as much evil as points them towards hating evil, seeking to defeat it, and desiring God’s Holy and perfect justice from a young age. Don’t burden them with every horrific detail or photograph that you might use to convict an adult of their abortion apathy. Children’s consciences have not been repetitively and deliberately squashed over time. Shift the focus onto goodness quickly, how an unborn child is a person deserving of protection, and why the law of God must be upheld and justice done in our land.
A few practical ideas to prepare children to take up this battle themselves include praying with them daily. Place abolitionist material everywhere you go (cards, brochures, stickers). Ride bikes around town and letterbox drop. Constantly talk to them about the sanctity of human life, how God created children by knitting them in their mother’s womb, and how every human is made in the image of God. Let them hear you congratulating new mothers, praying for the health of unborn children in families you know, speaking joyfully about children (including your own), and recognising the personhood of unborn children in every way you can.
Christian father, Abolitionism is not too complicated for your family devotions. Christian mother, your homeschool schedule is not too busy for it. If you read the Bible to your children, they are not too little to learn to fight the battle raging against their own generation. Take the next opportunity you get to share with your children pure and undefiled religion: visiting the fatherless in their affliction, demanding justice for the unborn. Scripture is totally sufficient for this work, and I pray these will encourage you as you take up this worthy task.
“Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 18:3-4
“And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.” Deuteronomy 6:7
“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” 2 Timothy 3:16
“For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works” Psalm 139:13-13-14
“Thou shalt not murder” Exodus 20:13
